One Nation One Election: The Modi cabinet approved the proposal of One Nation-One Election on Wednesday (September 18). Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed in a press conference that the One Nation-One Election Bill will be introduced in the upcoming winter session of Parliament. Opposition parties protested against the approval of the proposal of One Country-One Election.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that this is not practical and has been brought to divert attention from the issues. Despite the approval of One Nation-One Election by the Union Cabinet, the path to its implementation is not easy. To implement this, the Modi government will need amendments in the Constitution as well as approval from the state governments. Where will Modi government be worried about One Nation-One Election?
To implement One Nation-One Election, the Modi government at the Centre will have to amend the Representation of People Act 1955. Along with this, it will be necessary to amend the Rules of Procedure of the Lok Sabha. Similarly, it will be necessary to amend the Rules of Procedure of the state assemblies.
To pass the One Nation-One Election Bill in Parliament, the government will need a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. At the same time, the One Nation-One Election Bill will also need to be approved by the Legislative Assemblies of 15 states.

What suggestions did the committee give on ‘One Nation-One Election’?
A committee was formed under the leadership of former President Ram Nath Kovind for One Nation-One Election. This committee Lok Sabha Elections Before 2024, the committee had submitted its report to the central government in the month of March. The committee has suggested extending the term of all state assemblies till 2029. Along with this, it has suggested holding fresh elections in case of a hung assembly or no-confidence motion.
The committee has suggested that Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections should be held simultaneously in the first phase. In the second phase, local body elections can be held within 100 days. Along with this, the Election Commission has also been suggested to prepare a single voter list for holding simultaneous elections.
